Climate Talks End With Hope for a New More Comprehensive Legally-Binding Agreement

Durban – Several key and important steps forward were agreed at the UN climate convention meeting that closed on December 11 in Durban, including an agreement to negotiate a new and more inclusive treaty and the establishment of a Green Climate Fund.

But the outcome in the South African coastal city has left the world with some serious and urgent challenges if a global temperature rise is to be kept under 2° Celsius in the 21st century.

Durban Conference Delivers Breakthrough for Climate

Brussels – The European Union welcomes the agreement reached at the UN Climate Conference in Durban as a historic breakthrough in the fight against climate change. After two weeks of negotiations, the 195 Parties to the UN climate change convention agreed on a roadmap, proposed by the EU, for drawing up a legal framework by 2015 for climate action by all countries. UN Climate Change Conference in Durban Kicks Off

Durban – Against a background of record greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, more frequent and intense extreme weather events, but also growing momentum for action to fight climate change, the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban kicked off on November 28.

At the start of the conference, South African PresidentJacob Zuma pointed to the climate impacts in Africa as a reason for all governments to take action.

Durban Climate Talks: Environment Ministers Meet in Bamako to Firm up Africa's Position

Bamako (Mali) / Nairobi (Kenya) – Lead African climate change negotiators and high level experts from about 50 countries are meeting in Bamako, Mali to pave the way for African ministers to consolidate Africa’s common negotiating on a comprehensive international Climate Change regime beyond 2012. The experts’ segment of the Fourth special session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) on climate change opened on September 13 at the International Conference Center in Bamako.
