Save Forests: Avoid Forest Fragmentation

Forest Fragmentation is a cause of considerable concern in present times as industrial activities have forced their way through forests, leaving behind small dispersed patches. The threat of degradation looms large as these small reservoirs of biodiversity are easy prey to environmental threats. Fragmentation also results in breaking-up of many lifecycle processes for thousands of species.

This article by Laxmi Goparaju explains about forest fragmentation, its negative impacts on regional biodiversity and ecology, and how to diminish the same.

Bioenergy: Impediments and Plausible Solutions

Biomass resources have been in use for a variety of purposes since ages. Their multitude of uses includes usage as a livestock feed, meeting domestic and industrial thermal requirements, and the generation of power to fulfil electrical or mechanical needs. These resources provide for a clean source of power generation since most of them are considered to be carbon neutral. However, the commercial implementation of biomass resources seems to be ridden with problems. Setu Goyal from TERI University discusses practical solutions.

What Plagues Implementation of Forest Rights Act 2006?

The key provisions introduced by Government of India (GoI) in the form of Forest Rights Act (FRA) hold high hopes for forest peoples; however, the system has yet to overcome many hurdles to realise the true potential of FRA.

The recent pronouncements by the Indian Government over two controversial projects – Vedanta Resources and POSCO – present a mixed outcome of the existing complexities of putting a newer system in place. Archana Vaidya, a natural resource management and environment law consultant, dwells in detail upon the provisions of FRA, and how it can be implemented effectively.

Renewable Resources: Biomass Wastes

Biomass is the material derived from plants that use sunlight to grow, which include plant and animal materials such as wood from forests, material left over from agricultural and forestry processes, and organic industrial, human and animal wastes. For sustainability of modern societies, a transition from conventional energy systems to one based on renewable resources is necessary to meet the ever-increasing demand for energy and to address environmental concerns, concludes this article by Salman Zafar.

Renewable Energy Production from Tannery Wastes

The conventional leather tanneries are highly polluting as they produce large amounts of organic & chemical pollutants, apart from being major energy users. As per conservative estimates, about 600,000 tons per year of solid wastes are generated worldwide by leather industry and approximately 40–50% of the hides are lost to shavings & trimmings. Here, the authors suggest implementation of Gasification technology and Anaerobic Digestion as possible solutions to address these problems.
